Assist Profile

Introduction

ASSIST is an organization that came into existance during the dialogue activities between students called “ESTUDA HAMUTUK” in Colmera, Dili. Those who belonged to this activity were university students. The topics in our discussions became an inspiration to bring about the ASSIST organization. This organization appeared precisely because of the spirit of Timorese young people at the time of the liberation. Based on the passed experiences, we too gained cougrage to do something to our country in its development process.

Development in all sectors came from the initiative of young people who had received various educations; young people who have nationalism never wait for other people to start, we young people ourselves start doing something for our nation and communities.

Now a days, the goverment and many organizations create many possibilities to enrich the knowledge of the young people; but most of them seem to be concentrated in the Capital (Dili). Thus, ASSIST such as a new youth organization, has been concentrating in rural areas with their own natural resources which are available.

Those specifics areas that Assist organization tries to do are: knowledge programs, promotion of rural social culture through electronic media, promotion of culture in the community itself, such as architecture, economic etc ...

Vision

Our own vision is to develop social culture and economy of the people, but particularly in communities of rural areas. We wish to give them access to modern sciences.

Culture of the community in rural areas itself can help them compete in this modern time.

The rural communities should try to find out particular ways to transform and improve culture and economy in our beloved country Timor Leste.

Mission

Assist mission is to contribute for a better life of the people in the future, particularly to work together with the people while developing human resources for the good of national development.

a. Non Formal Education

Education takes an important role for all countries, but especially for newly born countries, like East Timor. East Timor is a small country, so we ought to enhance and develop human resources as the main enrichment. Definitely education is a very important factor for progress.

As its vision-mission, ASSIST Organization would like to offer also non formal education to help young people in rural communities through the following education programs:

1. COMPUTER TRAINNING

· Software: installation program, Microsoft office, AutoCAD, data base, etc.

· Hardware: reparation

2. Linguistic:

· Portuguese and English

3. Art and culture:

a. Art

Basically, culture and history are part of the identity of the community. Through this simple program, we would like to help young people to discover our history and culture in every particular community. Therefore, ASSIST creates these cultural activities to sustain human values and hopefully for economic sustainability.

This ASSIST PROGRAM would like to help the community to identify their community is culture and history. And hence ASSIST PROGRAM prepares facilities and cultural social information through media technology. Furthermore, this program will introduce effective alternatives for necessary for the community to this area.

b. Economic sustainability

The economic problem is an enormous issue in our community and our country. Various entities insist that the government solve this problem; but it fails. The only way to diminish poverty of the community is to solve economic problems. Therefore, through this economic sustainable program, ASSIST would like to offer specific formation to increase the community’s knowledge. As the result, the community itself can resolve their own problems through various activities they have.

c. Research

Every development process should be based on the real data of such a particular situation. So development might follow the needs of the community. Based on this reason, ASSIST’s program would like to create division jobs to collect data and information based on facts in order to develop in our country but particularly in rural areas.

Result of the ASSIST program does

Based on the program on above, ASSIST would like to post the following as the result of our activities.

1. Non Formal Education:

Through this non formal education program, particularly in art; we would like to enrich the community’s knowledge; therefore they can become educators based on the course offered by ASSIST organization.

2. Cultural art

Culture exposes the identity of the community of a particular country. Cultural activity of the community should help the people to improve through the creative promotion the activities in cultural art which can make to the economy sustainable. On the other hand, through this program, ASSIST would like give the fundamental information by media technology concerning the development process in which Assist is concerning as a fundamental solution.

3. Economic sustainability

Through an economically sustainable program, hopefully the community will have courage to do daily activities, to work with professionalism to sustain their life.

4. Research

Through this specific program, information and data that the community collects; we will posted in electronic media; therefore any kind of entity in this country can get access to it, and eventually this will be for the development of this particular community.
